Evaluation Of Target Audience Research Questionnaire

I have managed to gain a good idea of what my target audience like to see in music videos by getting them to fill in my questionnaire. I asked 15 teenage girls a range of questions to do with their taste in music and what they like to see in music videos, which would help me when coming up with ideas for my own music video because it meant I could use it to create a video that my target audience will enjoy.

For question one, the majority of people listed pop music videos as the music videos they most like to watch. I was surprised that every category I listed gained at least one vote because I didn't think my target audience would enjoy genres such as country.

In question two, the majority of people preferred to listen to song lyrics that contain a meaning, in other words they have a message. This didn't surprise me because it is easier to connect to the artist and understand why they wrote the song if the lyrics have a meaning to them and you lean something from them.

Again, in question three, people preferred to see music videos that reflect the lyrics of the song.

For question four, the majority chose happy songs which fits in well with my song choice

In question five, my target audience said they enjoy seeing special effects which also fits with some of my ideas of using special effects such as a green screen.

For question six, a big proportion of people said they prefer slow paced shots which surprised me because I thought that they would have said fast. However, I am going to do fast paced shots but just not as fast as they could be. I know that my target audience were thinking of shots that are 1-2 seconds but I am thinking 3-4.

In question seven, the majority of people said they prefer songs with a storyline however with some of the ideas that I have come up with my video will not be following a storyline but will be very closely related to the lyrics of the song.

Finally question eight showed that people don't mind what type of music video it is however most people voted for intertextual or a narrative, and both of these fit in well with my ideas.

This research has helped me finalise some important decisions I have to make and has influenced some of my ideas.

Ideas For My Song- 'Lights'

I chose Ellie Goulding's song 'Lights' because I feel like I have the freedom to use lots of different ideas and types of lighting to keep with the theme of the song. When I first heard it I had lots of ideas and even though its not my favourite song, I feel that I can incorporate a lot of different ideas into it. I am hoping that my music video will keep the audience entertained due to the different shots I want to film.

There is a music video to this song but it was done in 2011 so it has been out for a while. I have watched it a few times to give me some inspiration but when I first heard it, I had completely different ideas to the original music video, such as using a green screen . Therefore I don't have to worry about feeling like I have copied the video because I know mine will be completely different.

The research that I have done has inspired me because I picked songs that have a similar theme to mine so that I can easily relate to them. For example, because lighting is such an important part to this music video, I picked songs that have lots of lights in them so that I could see how it was done professionally and maybe try and replicate it.

I also looked at the different types of music videos, (for example, showcase, spectacle...) and discovered that I would like my music video to focus on the artist so that the audience can relate to them. Therefore my music video is going to fall into the showcase category. I want my music video to leave the audience feeling happy and cheerful.

Ellie Goulding Music Videos

Ellie Goulding's other music videos:

Starry Eyed

There are two versions of this music video. I have decided to look at the the original one. In my opinion this is the song that made her famous and as 'well-known' as she is today. It sees Goulding in various costumes and settings. The video uses a visual styling effect used generally in sporting analysis called StroMotion which created the unique look of Goulding and the dancer's echoes, reverses and reverberations as they dance to the song.

Burn

The video opens with an orange colour scheme of Goulding singing with friends and solar flares shining upon their movements with some smoke. Later, Goulding is seen in a gigantic field with hundreds of light spheres and the video ends with flares and more dancing and a red-themed scene. In the end, the lights form Goulding's logo in the field.

Beating Heart

The video begins with Goulding standing in a dark room drinking simulation serum and sees herself in a simulation, where she is in a misty forest. She meets a mysterious boy in the forest, and as she turns to walk away, she is pulled closer to him. The simulation ends and Goulding is seen standing in the same dark room.

My Song Choice- Lights by Ellie Goulding

I have chosen to do my music video on the song 'Lights' by Ellie Goulding because it means I can do a lot with it. I can experiment with lots of different lighting and hopefully make the music video effective.

Lights audio:

I had a way then losing it all on my own
I had a heart then but the queen has been overthrown
And I'm not sleeping now, the dark is too hard to beat
And I'm not keeping now the strength I need to push me

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone

'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone home

Voices I play within my head
Touch my own skin and hope that I'm still breathing
And I think back to when my brother and my sister slept
In an unknown place the only time I feel safe

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone

'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone home

Yeah, hee

Light, lights, lights, lights
Light, lights, lights, lights
(Home, home)
Light, lights, lights, lights
Light, lights

You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone

'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine it when I'm alone home

Home, home
Light, lights, lights, lights
Light, lights, lights, lights

Home, home
Light, lights, lights, lights
Light, lights, lights, lights

Home, home
Light, lights, lights, lights
Light, lights, lights, lights

Home, home
Light, lights, lights, lights
Light, lights, lights, lights
